Creating healthy, inclusive, online community-building spaces is one of Riot’s core goals. We’re lucky to share this goal with tons of great contributors across multiple digital spaces, games, and online communities.

Today begins the “Digital Wellbeing Design Contest” presented by Riot and IDEO. This challenge is inspired by the work of the Fair Play Alliance (FPA) and Sesame Workshop to create “Digital Wellbeing,” an initiative to build healthy interactions and strong communities in the Joan Ganz Cooney Center’s online playgrounds.

What it means to design for digital well-being and who is behind it?

The FPA and the Joan Ganch Center define digital well-being as the result of online spaces designed to foster feelings of well-being, achievement and belonging, and meaningful relationships between individuals, groups and communities.

Founded in 2017, FPA is a cross-industry initiative where more than 250 video game companies from around the world, including Riot, work together to foster healthy communities and player-to-player interaction. Riot’s Weszt Hart has played a key role in this digital wellbeing, along with FPA co-founder Kimberly Voll (Brace Yourself Games) and Natasha Miller (Activision Blizzard).

then he entered the game Joan Ganz Cooney Center Sesame Workshop, an independent research and innovation lab focused on the challenges of fostering intelligence, strength and kindness in children in a changing multimedia environment. The Cooney Center partnered with the FPA for the Design for Digital Wellbeing project because they know the digital future will be a shared experience for all of us, including children, and this is something we can only tackle together.

Digital well-being goes beyond video games: it’s about making all digital spaces safer, both now and for generations to come. The FPA and the Cooney Center are working with a growing group of partners to create and promote a set of robust, promising and demonstrable approaches to developing a playbook for digital wellbeing. Making the innovation challenge available to everyone

Over the past 11 years, IDEO has run more than 70 challenges with partners who are passionate about making a positive impact in our world. Designing for digital well-being is an unexplored field; That’s why Riot is excited to partner with IDEO to embrace different perspectives and mobilize new ideas that will help create and sustain thriving online spaces.

The “Design Competition for Digital Prosperity” is open to academics, community administrators, educators, designers, developers, innovators, parents, researchers, students, and all individuals interested in designing digital spaces. Participants from around the world will be able to draw inspiration from three themes when creating their innovations and designs: “design for marginalized voices”, “promoting healthy and strong digital spaces” and “building a future for children and families”.

The winning entries will receive funding and support from IDEO and Riot Games to help bring their ideas to life in hopes of setting digital wellbeing as an industry-wide standard. Winners will be announced at the end of November 2022. To learn more about the competition and submit your designs, visit
