One of the disciplines with the highest adrenaline is preparing for the World Cup by revising its concepts.
Speed skating is a fast-paced discipline. In this sport, athletes compete on roller skates and can reach speeds of 50 kilometers per hour during the race.
There are two modes: track and route. Athletes participating in the track must complete a certain number of laps on an oval track. On the road, on the other hand, they do the same on a paved urban circuit. The main goal of both methods is to reach the finish line as soon as possible.
In both modalities, athletes must perform different tests.
We have two categories on the track: speed and background:
? Goal vs. 200m goal: Two runners standing on the line in the middle of the straight participate and the winner is the one who completes the lap in less time.
? 500mts + D: Skaters must complete two and a half laps on the track, positioning in the order of arrival. You compete from the group stage to the final until there are only four people left.
? 1,000mts: skaters run five laps of the track to cross the finish line first. They start in the group stage and only eight people made it to the finals.
? 10,000 eliminations: Depending on the number of participants in the test, the last runner to cross the finish line for each certain number of laps is eliminated. With one lap remaining, three athletes must remain on the track who will play the last lap, classified in order of arrival at the finish line.
? 10,000 combined: Every half lap, add first and second, two and one points respectively, to cross the finish line. In rounds where there is no total, the last one is eliminated. The person with the most points and not eliminated wins the race.
On the way we have two categories: speed and background:
? 100 m lanes: It is performed in a 100 m straight line divided into 2/3 lanes. The competition is based on classification by time or arrival to reach the final of the three competitors.
? Lap of the circuit: One lap of the circuit competes by positioning in order of arrival. From the group stage, they compete until only four athletes remain for the final. 2. background:
? 15,000 eliminations: Depending on the number of participants in the test, the last runner to cross the finish line for each certain number of laps is eliminated. With one lap remaining, three drivers must remain on the track to compete in the final lap and be classified in order of arrival at the finish line.
? 10,000 points: the first and second to cross the finish line in all rounds add one and two points respectively. If a runner withdraws or is eliminated before the end of the test, he loses the accumulated points. The winner is the runner who managed to collect the most points.
Do you know…?
• Although Speed Skating is not a part of the Olympic Games, it is recognized by the IOC (International Olympic Committee). • On the last day of the competition, at WRG Barcelona 2019, despite the various representatives of the Argentine National Team in the Marathon, the only person to receive a medal for Albiceleste was an athlete competing in the Master Men (over 60 years old). The medal winner was Oscar Contrera from San Juan, who won the bronze medal.
